Viene illustrato il caso di una donna di 42 anni, che nell'ambito di una sindrome da iperstimolazione ovarica verificata durante un programma FIVET ha presentato complicanze coagulative gravi, che hanno comportato l'amputazione di un avambraccio. Risulta particolarmente importante la discussione etica del caso, che coinvolge i valori del desiderio di maternità, di salute e di vita, ma anche una riflessione sul ruolo stesso della medicina.

In particolare, ci soffermiamo su diverse interpretazioni del concetto di "terapia", quando applicato alla fecondazione assistita, con le implicazioni sul bilancio dei rischi/benefici e sul consenso informato in questo delicato settore della medicina.
