Dopo aver ricordato i progressi nell'assistenza tecnica per ristabilire le capacità sessuali nei malati lesionati al midollo spinale, l'autore concentra la sua attenzione sulle condizioni necessarie perchè questo tipo di assistenza non si riduca a favorire esclusivamente la genitalità svincolandola dal senso profondamente personale della sessualità. Ricorda dunque come la sessualità sia innanzitutto una capacità di donazione personale. Fa vedere che una terapia della capacità sessuale incentrata esclusivamente sulla genitalità produce nel malato una visione della sessualità puramente egoistica, e dunque porta a una regressione nella sua maturazione affettiva e sessuale, conducendolo frequentemente a una situazione di isolamento e frustrazione che peggiora la sua situazione anzichè migliorarla.
