The term Genetic Engineering refers to a sophisticated new form of experimental activity by means of which an attempt is being made to modify the genetic make-up of beings, generally single-celled, by introducing DNA fragments from another source into their genome. The new direction is a hybrid branch of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and is the result of a major shift that is taking place in the direction of modern molecular biology.
